I can’t believe it’s almost December! If you’re anything like me, it feels like December flies by with of all the fun holidays, events, and get-togethers, so the more you can plan ahead the less hectic the month will feel. I came up with a list of creative Instagram photos to post this Christmas that hopefully give you some ideas when creating content in December! These are also great ideas for Instagram stories if the photo just doesn’t look right with your feed, or if you want to give some more detail in a video.
Decorating a gingerbread house
Not only is this a fun activity to do while watching a Christmas movie and spending time with your loved ones, but it makes for a cute photo! Many grocery stores now sell pre-made gingerbread house kits (some are even pre-assembled!) so all you need to do is decorate! The kits come with candy, but you can always add your own to spruce up the decorating. Try peppermints, mini candy canes, gumdrops, sprinkles, M&M’s, pretzel sticks, or Necco wafers.
Your favorite Christmas ornaments
Whether you have favorite ornaments from your childhood or new ones that you’ve collected, show your followers some of your favorite ornaments and tell what makes them special to you.
Hot chocolate in a cute mug
I’m a sucker for hot chocolate in the winter, and drinking out of a cute mug makes it taste better, right? Add some marshmallows, a peppermint stick, or whipped cream and snap a picture!
Stores have so many pairs of cute pajamas during the holidays! Matching family pjs are perfect for a photo-op, but you can also take a picture curled up on the couch in your favorite pajamas or in front of the tree for a more festive look.
Do you have a family tradition that you grew up with or started as you began a family of your own? Share it with your followers!
Your Christmas tree
This one may be too obvious, but I think we all love seeing other people’s Christmas trees! You can get such great inspiration for your own decor, plus they are just fun to look at. You can mix it up with a daytime photo and one at night with the tree lights on.
Decorations around your home
Just like Christmas trees, people love to see the rest of your decor! Get creative with close-up shots, different angles, and full room views. Even if your decor is simple or minimalistic, share it!
Sending out Christmas cards
Sending (and receiving) Christmas cards are one of my favorite parts of the holidays. Share a photo of your finished Christmas card, addressing the envelopes, or your finished stack ready to be mailed out. You can also show how you display Christmas cards in your home once you start receiving them.
Throwback Christmas photos
I grew up in a family where we always took pictures, so I am fortunate to have photo albums full of memories. This includes lots of photos and video from Christmases growing up! Share some of your favorites and tell a story about the photos.
There are some pretty spectacular light displays around! You can share how you have the outside of your home decorated or a spot you come across that’s decorated beautifully.
Front porch decor
Do you have a fun doormat, pretty wreath, or some mini trees on your porch? Show your followers! I didn’t get the chance to decorate our front porch last year, so I’m really hoping to find some cute decor this time!
Holiday nail color
I feel like the holidays are the perfect time to get festive with your nails! From a pretty Christmas red, to dark burgundy, or full on glitter, show your holiday nails! I’m still debating how I want mine to look for the holidays, so I’m looking up inspo pictures too!
Decorating sugar cookies
My mom and I always like to bake and decorate sugar cookies for Christmas. About halfway through we always realize we made too many to come up with unique designs on each haha. I love cookie decorating videos on Instagram and would love to be that talented, but for now I’ll share our simpler iced sugar cookies! If you aren’t a sugar cookie person, show what other types of cookies you make for the holidays.
Who doesn’t love cute gift wrap?! Share photos of your wrapping paper, finished packages, accessories you use to spruce up the gifts, a flatlay, or get a picture of you wrapping the gifts!
Stockings hung up
Another classic photo! Whether you hang your stockings on the fireplace mantle, staircase, TV stand, etc., share your cute stockings. You can also share them on Christmas morning once they’ve been filled up!
A Christmas craft
There are so many craft ides on Pinterest from wreaths to ornaments and everything in between. Show your take on a fun Christmas craft and tell your followers how you did it.
The first snowfall
I know not everyone lives where it snows, and not everyone will get snow by Christmas, but snowy pictures are such a dream! If you can snap some photos in the snow, do it! Take a photo bundled up, of your cute snow boots, or twirling around in the falling snow!
Your favorite Christmas movie
Curl up on the couch and pop in your favorite Christmas movie! Take a picture from the couch, of the movie case surrounded by props, or headed to the movie theater to see a Christmas movie.
A holiday party outfit
Holiday party outfits are also some of my favorite posts! You can get so creative with your outfit and it’s fun to see the trends each season. Whether it’s a work party, family dinner, or a get-together with a group of friends, share your festive outfit.
Presents under the tree
After you’ve finished wrapping all of your gifts, take a photo of them underneath the tree! For those of you with kids, you can also share on Christmas morning after Santa’s brought his gifts.
There are some cute advent calendars out there! Share yours with your followers either on the first day or the day before Christmas. You can also post a story every day of you progressing through your advent calendar.
Kissing under the mistletoe
Several stores now sell mistletoe that you can use for parties, seasonal decor, or for a Christmas card prop. Kissing under the mistletoe makes for a super cute holiday photo!
Whether you shop in stores, online, or a combination of both, share a photo or two while you’re shopping. It can be your pile of shopping bags, a cute Christmas display in your favorite store, a photo of you during your shopping, or even a few gifts that you’ve purchased.
Holiday makeup look
There are some amazing holiday makeup looks out there! Find a tutorial on YouTube or come up with a look of your own and share a close-up!
A holiday cocktail
Have a favorite holiday cocktail? Take a festive photo to share with your followers along with the recipe! Use cranberries, candy canes, or cinnamon sticks to spruce it up. If you aren’t a mixologist (I’m not!) take a photo “cheers-ing” with your significant other or friends at a restaurant with a fun cocktail.
Building a snowman
I think photos in the snow are so pretty! Build a snowman with your kids, friends, or partner and take a picture of you guys next to it. If building a snowman sounds like too daunting of a task, do some snow angels or have a friendly snowball fight.
A family photo
This could be the photo you used on your Christmas card or a new one that you take during the holidays. Share a little bit about your family – it’ll be fun to look back on in the future too!
Tacky Christmas sweater
Tacky Christmas Sweater parties have become a hit and there are tons of creative DIY outfits on Pinterest. I’ve also seen lots of tacky Christmas sweater options at Target this season if you don’t have time to make your own!
There’s something special about ice skating photos! You can either take candid photos skating around or stop for a posed photo if you have a specific pose you’re going for. You can either bring someone on the ice with you to snap the picture, or they can stand at the edge of the rink if they aren’t comfortable getting on the ice.
Do you donate money, sponsor a family, or volunteer during the holidays? Let your followers know how you’re giving back this season to give them some ideas of how they can give back in their communities. Your local followers may want to get involved with the same things you’re doing!
Your favorite Christmas story
As a kid I always loved reading books, especially at Christmas! My mom would put all of our Christmas books into a basket that sat by the tree and would pick a different one to read each day. You can share a photo of how you store your books or reading your favorite one. You can also share a favorite bible verse either in the caption or make a cute graphic in Canva!
Christmas tradition or event in your town
Does your town have a yearly Christmas program, light display, or caroling? Capture some festive photos and tell a short story about what your town does for the holidays. Here in Indy, one of my favorite traditions is the Circle of Lights in downtown!
Your favorite Christmas candle
There are so many scents available around the holidays! Whether you like some of the classics from Bath and Body Works or a new one you’ve come across, snap a picture and tell your followers where they can get one of their own!
DIY gift idea(s)
If you’re crafty and like to make Christmas gifts, share a finished picture and some how-to directions in the caption and additional photos! DIY gifts can be great for when you need multiple of something, such as a work Christmas party or to send with the kids to school.
Store window display
Stores go all out with their decorative window displays during the holidays. Take a photo of your favorites! If you’re in NYC this winter, be sure to stop by Saks and Cartier for two of my favorite displays!
Warming up by the fireplace
Fireplace photos always look so cozy! Set up a comfy area around the fireplace with blankets, pillows, a cup of hot chocolate, and a good book for a fun photo!
Do your pets wear a festive collar? Or let you dress them up? Share a picture of them in some festive accessories! If they don’t like dressing up, take a Christmas themed photo with them – this could be in front of the tree, outside with Christmas lights, or them asleep with a Christmas blanket or toy.
Whether you like the classics or some of the newer, fun candies that have come out, find a creative way to show your followers! Candy can add some bright colors to your feed and a sense of playfulness. If you don’t want to share colorful candy, stick with candy canes, peppermints, and chocolates for a more classic feel.
Yay for Christmas morning! Share photos (and stories) of gifts being opened, having breakfast, kids playing with their new toys, what you’re wearing, etc. Some of my favorite family photos are from Christmas morning!
I hope this list has given you some inspiration on what to capture this December! Feel free to tag me in any of your Christmas themed photos so I can see how you were inspired!
