We had been meaning to visit Detroit for a while, and when we found out last Christmas that David Foster was going to be performing at Caesars Windsor, we figured it was the perfect time to go! I bought tickets for my parents to join us for the concert in the spring. Unfortunately there were labor disputes at the hotel, and all shows were postponed. David Foster ended up being rescheduled the day after my surgery (August 3), which meant we wouldn’t be able to go. Our hotel didn’t allow us to cancel our reservation, but could switch the dates around. We found a weekend that we were free and headed up to Motor City with a list of things to do in Detroit!
Before stopping at our hotel, we went to American Jewelry and Loan, the pawn shop from the TV show Hardcore Pawn. I had been in college and got to meet Les and Ashley! They were packed late Friday afternoon and only spent 15 minutes browsing.
When we got to our hotel, we checked to see if any comedians or performers were in town for something to do that night. Ron White was performing at Caesar’s, so we bought tickets for later that evening. We went to our favorite restaurant, Bakersfield, for dinner (more to come on Bakersfield later!) and then drove across the bridge into Canada for the show! I used to watch Ron in the Blue Collar Comedy Tour videos, so I enjoyed getting to see him live! We spent a little less than an hour in the casino, due to bad luck on the slots hahaha.
Saturday morning we decided to eat breakfast at our hotel so we could sleep in. We went to the Detroit Institute of Arts, which is one of my favorite art museums! I couldn’t wait to take Jason and show him around. We ate lunch at the cafe in the museum and stayed until closing (but still didn’t get to see everything)!
That night we walked to Greektown and had dinner at Prism. The casino had our favorite game (electronic baccarat) that we only ever get to play at the MGM in Las Vegas! We spent the majority of the night in the casino. We had a nice walk home, enjoying the music and the skyline.
Sunday morning we packed our bags and drove to Belle Isle before we headed back home. We stopped to see the fountains, conservatory, and the Great Lakes Museum (Jason’s choice LOL).
Detroit was such a fun weekend getaway with lots of things to do! We are gearing up for several trips throughout the end of the year, so stay tuned! What are your favorite weekend getaway spots?
